Clear Aligners

Do you ever wish you had been given the opportunity to have your teeth straightened as a child? Or perhaps, you spent months having orthodontic treatment only to find your teeth are now relapsing into their original position?

We are now offering clear aligners, a type of ‘invisible brace’ at both our practices.

Clear aligners can be used in some patients to improve your facial appearance and smile. The treatment usually takes between 9-12 months.

There are a series of Clear aligners, made from a comfortable plastic material, which are responsible for gradually moving your teeth into the desired position. The aligners are worn throughout the day but removed for eating, drinking and cleaning.

The Clear aligners can be used to treat a range of problems which include gaps in teeth, crowded teeth and some bite problems.

Advantages of Clear Aligners;

  • can be worn by patients of all ages
  • practically invisible to the casual observer
  • can be removed before eating, drinking or brushing your teeth
  • comfortable.
  • ideally suited to busy lifestyle

There are 3 steps to getting started:

  1. Contact our receptionists who will make an appointment with our Specialist Orthodontist - they will discuss all orthodontic options with you.
  2. Examination of your teeth and gums to include a series of photographs which are passed on to our laboratory.
  3. A 3D model is made of your teeth which acts as a blueprint for the manufacture of your Clear braces.

Private Orthodontic Care for Children

Private orthodontic care is available to under 18s who require orthodontic treatment for dental health reasons like significant crowding or protrusion of the teeth as well as treatment for milder or more cosmetic problems.

Our visiting Consultant Orthodontist, Mr Goh, can do a private consultation for those patients who would like to consider orthodontic treatment.

Private Orthodontic Care for Adults

You may choose your orthodontic treatment to be carried out privately with us. This route benefits those patients who would like to improve the appearance of their teeth without compromising their long-term dental health.

Treatment privately allows the following benefits:

  • Immediate start
  • Visiting specialist orthodontist at our Dunnington practice
  • Aesthetic (clear crystal sapphire) ceramic bracket option
  • Hygienist visits included if needed
  • Easy payment options over the course of treatment

Private orthodontic care is available by referral from your dentist or by directly contacting us.

What to Expect

We will begin by discussing your concerns and wishes before carrying out a full assessment of your teeth. This is likely to include x-rays, impressions (moulds of the teeth) and photographs. Treatment can sometimes take more than two years so it is important you are happy from the outset with what is recommended. Braces are almost always needed. Those which are used most often are:

A fixed brace – this is the most common type of brace today, often known as “train tracks”. Brackets are glued onto the teeth and linked by wires. Small elastic hoops (modules) are often used to hold the wire in position. The wires exert gentle pressure to move the teeth into a new position. The brackets can be metal or clear ceramic and the modules come in many colours.

A removable brace – this is sometimes used for correcting a simple problem, such as moving a single tooth or expanding the dental arch. It has a plastic baseplate with wires and springs attached. Removable braces need to be worn all the time except for cleaning or sport.

Functional appliances – these are used to harness the growth of the jaws and improve way the upper and lower teeth meet. There are several designs all of which fit on to both the upper and lower teeth and hold the lower jaw forward. They are mostly removable but should be worn as near to full-time as possible

Clear aligners– these are clear ‘ invisible’ plastic braces, like very thin gumshields which are suitable for simple tooth movements. They are particularly favoured by adults, but have limitations to the extent to which they can move teeth.

Retainers – at the end of treatment, all patients should wear retainers to hold their teeth in the new position. These can be removable or fixed and are an important part of treatment.

When we have agreed the treatment with you, we will ensure you fully understand the procedure, the commitments to the time scale, the retention period after active treatment is completed and the need for excellent tooth brushing during treatment. This is the process of obtaining your consent to proceed.

If you require orthodontic extractions and you are registered elsewhere, we will normally write to your own dentist to request they undertake this.
